§ 01 · Identity

We are heritage with momentum

Bromont is an Olympic venue running an Olympic-pedigree event with a small-town, volunteer-driven soul. Our graphics should feel rooted, confident, and warmly Québécois — never generic American pro-sports.

We are

  • Heritage-aware — we honor the 1976 Olympics without dwelling on it
  • Bilingual by default — English and French sit together, not translate-after
  • Boutique & spectator-friendly — a venue you can walk in 30 minutes
  • Athletic and accurate — riders, horses, scores quoted precisely
  • Hospitality-forward — "stay and play in Bromont"
  • Confident in our position on the calendar — between Tryon and Maryland

We are not

  • Generic American pro-sports superlative — no "ELITE FIELD" hyperbole
  • Cold corporate broadcast — we credit volunteers and organizers by name
  • Trying to be Burghley or Kentucky — we're our own boutique event
  • Anglicizing names, places, or accents — diacritics preserved everywhere
  • Tech-bro vocabulary — no "platform," "experience," or "leverage"
  • Hiding the sponsors — Mars has 90 years of horse heritage; honor it

The Bromont Horse Trials began in 1987 under organizer Sue Ockendon, building on the venue's 1976 Olympic legacy. Today the MARS Bromont CCI is the only FEI-recognized international eventing venue in Canada — a key preparatory run for Aachen, Maryland, and beyond.

The 2026 edition coincides with the 50th anniversary of Bromont's Olympic year. That tension — between half a century of heritage and the live drama of horses crossing the Bromont hills tonight — is the editorial through-line for every graphic we ship.

§ 02 · Color

A palette of indigo, teal, and gold

Indigo #2B328D and teal #59C6A8 are pixel-extracted from the official Bromont logo SVGs — these are contractual, not chosen. Anniversary gold is reserved for ceremonial moments. Click any swatch to copy its hex.

§ 03 · Type

A dual-track type system

Fraunces brings editorial heritage to ceremonial graphics and the brand book itself. Inter handles every broadcast graphic — its tabular numerics and high x-height survive a TV viewed from across a barn. JetBrains Mono carries every score.

§ 05 · Broadcast graphics

Live previews of the graphics package

Toggle through the on-air states. Phase determines accent stripe color (dressage purple, XC saddle-brown, SJ turf green). The MARS title lockup stays top-left at all times. The Bromont bug stays top-right. Safe-area toggle previews the FEI 10% inset.

§ 06 · Voice & tone

Three registers, one voice

Bromont's voice is Quebec hospitality + Olympic heritage + serious eventing journalism. We flex register by context — ceremonial moments lean editorial, live calls stay athletic, social leans warm. Never break across registers.

§ Ceremonial register

Heritage with momentum

For title cards, opening/closing montages, the anniversary lockup, MARS sponsor stings. Warm, confident, heritage-aware. Honor the venue and the volunteers.

An equestrian triathlon, set in the historic Bromont hills.

§ Live call register

Accurate, present

For commentator-supplied lower-thirds and on-screen calls. Athletic, present-tense. Cite rider home town. Lead with the horse-and-rider pair, not just the rider.

Dunham, Québec's Colleen Loach and FE Golden Eye into the water complex.

§ Bilingual rule

English and French live together

Bromont is a Québec event. Every persistent on-screen graphic is built EN/FR side-by-side at design time — never auto-switched. French strings run ~20% longer; lower-third layouts must accommodate "SAUT D'OBSTACLES" alongside "SHOW JUMPING" without truncation. Diacritics preserved everywhere.

§ Anti-patterns

Don't slip into these

No "ELITE FIELD" superlatives. No "LIVE EXCLUSIVE" — we're a free livestream by design. No tech-bro vocabulary. No anglicized place names. No treating MARS as just a logo — honor 90 years of Mars-family horse heritage.

§ 07 · Sponsors

A title, four tier-one partners, and a wide field

Every graphic carries the MARS title lockup. Tier-one government and venue partners share the next tier. Official partners cycle through the sponsor reel between divisions. Loop sequencing below.

§ Sponsor reel sequencing — 30 fps

Step 01 4.0 s MARS title — full hold
Step 02 1.5 s × 4 Tier 1 — government & venue
Step 03 1.2 s × 18 Official partners — alphabetical, ~22 s
§ 08 · Motion

Confident, never frenetic

Slower and more deliberate than American pro-sports motion. Bromont's heritage register calls for confident, considered movement — frame counts at 30fps. Anticipation 3f, follow-through 5f. Always respect prefers-reduced-motion.

Easing

Default: cubic-bezier(0.65, 0, 0.35, 1) — ease-in-out. AE temporal ease in 33%, out 67%.

Safe area

10% title-safe inset (FEI standard). Bottom 1/4 clear of permanent graphics during XC — commentators reference fence numbers there.

Bug position

Top-right, 5% inset, 52 px. MARS title lockup lives top-left simultaneously.

Reduced motion

Every CSS file honors prefers-reduced-motion: reduce — degrade slides to fades.

§ 09 · Open questions

What needs Sue's ratification

This brand book was assembled from public materials and broadcast best-practice — no client-supplied brand guide exists yet. The decisions below are agent recommendations. Each comes with a default we'll ship unless overridden.

Q1 — Primary & secondary brand colors resolved

Pixel-extracted from the official Bromont logo SVGs: indigo #2B328D (the MARS, BROMONT CCI wordmark, and every Bromont logo's primary) and teal #59C6A8 (the horse silhouette, four CCI stars, divider hairlines).

No action needed — palette confirmed from contractual logo artwork. The early forest-green draft was wrong and has been corrected.

Q2 — Anniversary lockup design

The 2026 edition is the 50th anniversary. The brand-pack.json reserves a slot for a "Red, White & Gold" anniversary lockup — but the artwork doesn't exist yet.

Recommendation: commission a one-off anniversary mark (RNS Videomedia design) for the Thursday June 4 fundraiser at the Ski Hill. Reuse on opening title card.

Q3 — Mars title-sponsor lockup contractual rules

I inferred title-lockup positioning (top-left, every frame, gold hairline divider) from Mars-brand standard practice across other sponsorships — not from a contractual document.

Recommendation: request the MARS Equestrian sponsorship pack from Mars.Equestrian@effem.com to confirm lockup and clear-space rules before show day.

Q4 — Bilingual depth — do we caption?

The site is fully bilingual, but past livestreams have only had English commentary. Should we render FR subtitle/caption track for the YouTube simulcast?

Recommendation: ship FR-titled chyrons (already in design) but skip FR captions for 2026 — re-evaluate for 2027 once we have post-show engagement data.

Q5 — Sponsor reel cycle policy

Alphabetical cycle of 18 official partners is fair but produces a 22-second reel. Some venues prefer tier-weighted cycles giving higher-spend partners more screen time.

Recommendation: ship alphabetical (fair, lowest-controversy) unless Bromont's commercial team has a tier-weighted contract preference.

Q6 — Photographer credit

Cealy Tetley is the official event photographer (per bromonthorsetrials.com). All on-screen photography should carry "© Cealy Tetley" credit.

Recommendation: bake the credit into the bottom-right corner of all rider headshot bio cards. 11pt JetBrains Mono in 60% opacity gold.
